A rotatable reel, also for storing webs, comprises flaps 47 hinged to one flange 29 and movable to expose or cover the space between the flanges. As shown, the flanges 29, 31 are secured together by annular hubs on each flange and the flaps 47 are hinged to lugs 49 on the upper flange and are spring-biased 55 to the open position in which they are coplanar with the upper flange. The flaps are latched closed by interengagement of resilient lugs 59 and notches 63. Alternatively the hinge may be integral with the upper flange and flaps, with leaf-springs riveted to the flange to engage notches on the flaps to hold them both open and closed (Figs. 8, 9, not shown). The reel is located in tape handling apparatus with the lower flange borne by a bearing annulus (43, Fig. 2, not shown) formed on the upper part of a housing (21) for the spindle drive assembly. A raised portion 65, having a cam or cams 67, is formed in a reel-receiving well of the apparatus to unlatch the flaps upon reel rotation, the web being guided in a trough (Fig. 1, not shown) past the head. |
