Hexamethylenediamine is prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of adiponitrile in the presence of NH 3 by conducting the reaction in at least two reaction zones in series, the NH 3 present in each zone being passed to the next zone and the adiponitrile being divided into separate feeds to each reaction zone. The whole reaction mixture may be passed from one zone to the next or, alternatively, the hexamethylenediamine may be removed from the mixture before passage. The reaction mixture is preferably cooled so that the temperatures of the products from each reaction zone are within 50‹ C. of each other. |
