1281870 Labelling polygonal containers J G WESLEY 19 Nov 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 55082/70 Heading B8F A machine for applying labels to round containers is adapted for use with polygonal containers by an attachment 400 (Fig. 1) which comprises a pair of side levers 442, 443 connected at one end by a bar 444 and at the other end by a shaft 414. Spin wheels 402, 404 are journalled on the side levers and mesh with wheels 410, 412 fast on the shaft 414 to ensure synchronous rotation. Recesses on the inwardly facing surfaces of the spin wheels are adapted to engage the ends of a polygonally cross-sectioned container mounted therebetween the recess in wheel 404 being provided with a spring pressed plate. Gravity biased pressure rollers 418, 420 are mounted on a loose sleeve 492 so as to engage the peripheral surface of the container. The assembly is pivotally supported by pins 446, 448 removably mounted on the labelling machine (Fig. 4) so as to be engageable with rollers 32, 33 which normally support a round container. The roller 33 is adjustably mounted to enable containers of various sizes to be accommodated. The labels are stored in a hopper H and are fed by roller 50 to a holding station wherein the edge of the label abuts a stop 35, the feed rollers 36, 37 normally being held apart. When rollers 36, 37 are brought together and stop 35 removed, the label is fed between roll 62 and glue roll 60 and thence round roller 32 to the container. Rolls 32 and 33 rotate continuously while the machine is switched on. Operation.-The attachment 400 is rotated clockwise away from rolls 32, 33 by a treadle arrangement 422 and a polygonal container mounted between the spin wheels so that the container seam side 471 faces the hopper. On releasing the treadle the wheels contact rollers 32, 33 and begin to rotate. Simultaneously arm 111A is pivoted to close switch S1 which conditions the machine to be operated subsequent to the closing of switch S2 by lever 115A being displaced by contact with a corner of the container. Switch S2 starts a timer which causes roller 36 to ascend and stop 35 to be removed at the correct moment to ensure that the leading end of the label is fed into contact with the seam 483 of the container. The gravity biased pressure rolls smooth the label on to the surface of the container. When the label has been applied the treadle is again operated to remove the spin wheels from rollers 32, 33, and the arm 111A is released. The machine is arranged so that in the absence of a label being detected by a photodetector P the release of arm 111A and return of switch S1 activates solenoid SOL 1 to clutch roller 50 to feed a fresh label to the holding position, whereupon the photo detector senses the leading edge of the label and declutches roller 50. Timing devices are also incorporated so that selected parts of the label may be gummed.
