Existing ultrasonic flowmeters do not operate effectively under transient, intermittent and turbulent flows, or flows of clean fluids. An improved ultrasonic flowmeter comprises a trigger oscillating apparatus; a pulse receiver; a transducer responsive to the pulse receiver for emitting ultrasonic pulses toward a measurement line within a fluid pipe; signal processing means for processing an ultrasonic echo signal from the transducer; flow velocity distribution calculating means for analyzing the processed ultrasonic echo signal to determine the position and velocity of the ultrasonic reflecting body along the measurement line; and flow rate calculating means. The signal processing means filters the ultrasonic echo signal, and performs A/D conversion. The trigger oscillating apparatus controls the timings of signal transmission/reception between the pulse receiver and the AD converter, and has a predetermined wait time after causing the ultrasonic pulse oscillation and ultrasonic echo signal reception to successively occur a plurality of times.
