In a door closer comprising, in a housing 10, a rotary shaft 11 operatively connected to a spring 17 and hydraulic damping device 19, 20 by means of linkage members 13, 14 and a lever 16, a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 25, 26 cooperates with an actuating track 45 on member 13 to check the door movement over predetermined angles. The actuating track 45 is engaged by a pressure roller 29 connected through a pivot pin 28 and mounting plates 27 to the piston 26 which comprises at its forward end a fluid transfer passage 31 and ball valve 30 and is held in an operative position by a precompressed spring 33 in the base 25 which has at its other end two fluid transfer passages 36 and 37 (Fig. 3) leading respectively to an adjustable restrictor valve member 38 and an adjustable pressure relief valve assembly 37. The actuating track 45 is contoured to effect the checking action required which may be to delay the door closing when it is wide open (as shown, Figs. 1 and 2) or to produce a retarding action upon the door being opened a certain angle (Figs. 5 and 6). |
