A lighting device is provided with a hot cathode tube (17), a chassis (14) in which the hot cathode tube (17) is contained, and a heat dissipation mechanism (40) which is capable of dissipating the heat of the hot cathode tube (17) by making contact therewith. The heat dissipation mechanism (40) is provided with a heat dissipation sheet (43) which makes contact with the hot cathode tube (17), and also with a displacement section (42) which displaces the heat dissipation sheet (43) between a contact position at which the heat dissipation sheet (43) is in contact with the hot cathode tube (17) and a non-contact position at which the heat dissipation sheet (43) is not in contact with the hot cathode tube (17). The displacement section (42) displaces the heat dissipation sheet (43) to the non-contact position when the temperature of the displacement section (42) is lower than a predetermined temperature, and the displacement section (42) displaces the heat dissipation sheet (43) to the contact position when the temperature of the displacement section (42) is higher than the predetermined temperature.
