PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of changeover of AF control, which conforms to a state of an object, with timing a user wants during taking photos; and to provide a method for controlling the same. SOLUTION: A control means of the image pickup device determines whether an operation member which instructs the alteration of a set value for AF control is operated (S0_01), the operation member being provided separately from an operation member related to instructions to start AF control or photographing motion. When determining that a group of set values are already registered and AF motion is being executed, the control means conducts collective changeover to the registered group of set values by consecutively using a focus detection result (S0_09). For example, when auto focus control is made in a first focus state detection range and the operation member which instructs the alteration of the set value is determined to be operated, changeover from the first focus state detection range to a second focus state detection range is made.
