PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that a precise average flow rate cannot be calculated because a temporal proportion of each pulse is not taken into account in a time between fuel injection operations when calculating an average period in a known method of calculating an average period of a plurality of pulses being an output of an air flow sensor during fuel injection calculation to obtain the average flow rate, as a method of also detecting the flow rate during fuel injection calculation when adopting the air flow sensor for output of a frequency signal in an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The mass of air passing through an air flow rate detection device is calculated in an output time of each pulse from a plurality of pulse trains, the sum of the masses of air is divided by the time of measuring the plurality of pulses, and the average flow rate is calculated during the time of measuring the plurality of pulse trains.
