PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing ergothioneine capable of being utilized as a food, cosmetic or medicine safely and inexpensively. SOLUTION: The method for producing the ergothioneine is characterized by reacting an enzyme having an ergothioneine-synthesizing activity on a raw material containing at least a precursor, methyl group donor and the source of S-addition. The enzyme having the ergothioneine-synthesizing activity is preferably a fungal origin, and its production cost can be further made as inexpensive by using an artificially cultured fungi or the wasted parts of the fungi.
