PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save cost, to decrease weight, and to prevent the breakage of a gear caused by gear shift operation. SOLUTION: A rotary tool includes a rotation power source 2; a power transmitting portion 3 transmitting the rotation power of the rotation power source 2 to an output portion, and varying a speed-reducing ratio from the rotation power source to the output portion 4; a gear shift operating portion 5 for the switching operation of the speed-reducing ratio of the power transmitting portion; and a switch handle 8 for turning on/off the rotation power source. A regulating means is equipped which regulates the switching operation of the speed-reducing ratio by locking the gear shift operating portion while being interlocked with the turn-on operation of the switch handle. The regulating means is composed of an engaging member 7 freely engaged with an engaged portion provided integrally on the operating portion, and locking the operating portion when engaged with the engaged portion; and an interlocking member 6 moving the engaging member between a non-engaging position which is not engaged with the engaged portion and an engaging position which is engaged with the engaged portion according to the operation of the switch handle.
