The method involves determining absolute humidity of gas mass flow supplied to an internal combustion engine by a humidity sensor arranged in an intake section. Quantity of supplied exhaust gas portion is determined by comparing the absolute humidity of the gas mass flow with water content of fresh air. Water content of combustion residues of fuel is determined from the comparison result of the absolute humidity of the gas mass flow with the water content of the fresh air.
