PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for highly sensitively detecting a target substance contained in a sample in chromatography using enzyme chemiluminescence. SOLUTION: The method for detecting a target substance contained in a sample includes: a mixing step of mixing an enzyme-labeled substance to bind to the target substance with the sample; a capture step of inspecting a mixture acquired in the mixing step by a testing implement for chromatography and capturing the target substance by a capturing substance in a detection region; an addition step of adding a reagent containing an anionic surfactant to the detection region of the testing implement for chromatography after the capture step; a reaction step of bringing an enzyme of the enzyme-labeled substance bound to the capturing substance in the detection region via the target substance into reaction with a luminescent substrate; a detection step of detecting the target substance contained in the sample by detecting luminescence generated from the detection region by the reaction step.
