SELF-ALIGNING KNEE PROSTHESIS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved prosthesis for repairing a knee. SOLUTION: The prosthesis includes an insert 20 sandwiched between a femoral component 10 and a tibial tray 30. The femoral component 10 is shaped so that both the femoral component 10 and the tibial tray 30 will slidingly interface with the insert 20 during motion of the knee. At regions where the femoral component 10 interfaces with the insert 20 during extension and during an initial range of flexion of the knee, the femoral component's radius of curvature (R1) for flexion rotation is larger than its radius of curvature (R3) for varus/valgus rotation. In a preferred embodiment, the surface of the tibial tray 30 is convex and spherically curved, and the insert 20 is free to move in both the posterior-anterior direction and the medial-lateral direction with respect to the tibial tray 30.
