Relates to actuating mechanisms for moving a cover member over an opening in an enclosure member, in the plane of the cover member, between a position in which fastening members on the cover member and on the enclosure member overlap each other to retain the cover member in position and a position on which the fastening members are clear of each other. According to the invention, the mechanism comprises at least one bolt member slidably mounted on the inside of the cover member for axial movement in the opening and closing directions of the cover member, the length of the bolt member or members being such that with the cover member in position on the enclosure member, no appreciable axial movement of the bolt member or members is possible, and an eccentric mounted on an operating shaft projecting through the cover member, the eccentric being arranged to co-operate with the bolt member or members, whereby rotational movement of the operating shaft creates a reaction between the bolt member or members and the cover member which results in the cover member being moved between the engaged and disengaged positions of the fastening members depending on which way the operating shaft is turned. As shown, a door 10 of a flameproof box 34 is provided with an operating shaft 13 the outer end of which is engageable by a socket spanner 17 and the inner end of which carries an eccentrically disposed plug 19 on which is mounted eccentrically to the plug, an eccentric 20. The eccentric operates on a bearing block 21 secured to the eccentric by a washer 22 and the block 21 is arranged to slide on a plate 25 to which is attached two bolts 30 slidable on blocks 31 welded to the back of the door, the opposite ends of the bolts engaging the inside surfaces of the box. Rotation of the shaft 13 in one direction effects an upward movement of the door, due to the reaction between the bolt ends and the box, to disengage wedge members 35 disposed along the top of the door from a flange on the box and to move the door clear of wedged members 36 along the bottom of the box, thus to free the door, from the box. The door is secured in position on the box by rotation of shaft 13 in the other direction after the door has been applied to the face of the box. In the closed position, the eccentric is moved past the dead centre position to render the mechanism self-looking. The eccentric may be angularly adjusted on the plug 19 which is splined for the purpose, to permit adjustment of the position of the cover relative to the box. According to the Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable to the flameproof housing disclosed in Specification 709,719. |
