PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful and new ring type sensor, which is useful in an environment wherein a human being coexists with an automated machine such as a robot, a machine tool or an automobile, for example, a proximity sensor element. SOLUTION: The ring type sensor includes a plurality of node pairs, a first resistance network, a second resistance network and a sensor element. Each node pair includes a first node and a second node. The first resistance network electrically connects the first nodes together in the shape of meshes, and the second resistance network electrically connects the second nodes together in the shape of meshes. The sensor element generates a detection current according to a surrounding environment. The node pairs in a plurality include a sensor node pair having the sensor element connected electrically between the first node and the second node, and a non-sensor node pair provided with no sensor element. The sensor node pairs are disposed in the shape of a ring so that they may form a closed loop on the resistance network, while the non-sensor node pairs are disposed inside the closed loop on the resistance network.
