<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material to achieve high capacity when it is used for a battery, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery using the positive electrode active material. <P>SOLUTION: The positive electrode active material contains a compound represented by general formula Li<SB>x</SB>M<SB>y</SB>PO<SB>4</SB>(wherein x is within a range of 0<x≤2, y is within a range of 8≤y≤1.2, and M contains 3d transition metal).
