PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide iron nitride fine particles having excellent magnetic properties and a colloidal solution containing such iron nitride fine particles. SOLUTION: The iron nitride fine particles have an average primary particle diameter of≤100 nm, a saturation magnetization at 5 K of≥160 emu/g and a saturation magnetization at 300 K of≥100 emu/g. The iron nitride fine particles are produced, e.g. by a method including: vaporizing iron 20 by heating in a vacuum vessel 17; depositing the vaporized iron 21 on a surface of a liquid medium 15a as iron nitride fine particles through a nitrogen plasma 12a; and recovering the resulting deposit.
