PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the face of a driver who drives a vehicle. SOLUTION: Pixel groups consisting of pixels arranged to be aligned with a contour curve determined in advance to meet the contour of the face are sequentially selected from among pixels constituting an image obtained by imaging the face of the driver. Likelihood of the selected pixel groups constituting the contour of the face of the driver is computed. The position of the face of the driver is detected, on condition that the pixels constituting the pixel groups determined based on the likelihood constitute the contour of the face. Since linear edges which do not constitute the contour of the face are not thereby extracted as the contour of the face, the contour of the face can be accurately detected.
