PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inspect the presence or absence of a defect in the outer surface of a glass tube quickly and accurately without depending on the shape of the outer surface of the glass tube. SOLUTION: A method for inspecting a defect in the outer surface of a glass tube inspects a glass tube 1 whose inner surface 1b has a deformed part that changes the direction of refraction of transmitted light when the outer surface 1a of the glass tube is scanned in an axial direction by irradiating the outer surface 1a with light vertical thereto. The method includes the steps of: vertically irradiating the outer surface 1a of the glass tube 1 with light of a great width in the axial direction of the glass tube 1 from a projecting part 3 while rotating the glass tube 1 on the center of axle; causing a receiving part 4 to receive reflected light having a light axis L2 common to a light axis L1 of the light emitted vertically by the outer surface 1a of the glass tube 1 from the projecting part 3 out of components of the emitted light; and inspecting the presence or absence of a defect in the outer surface 1a of the glass tube 1 based on the reflected light thus received.
