The device has an airbag (5) arranged above a vehicle door (1.2) that is provided with a disk (1.2.1). The airbag is arranged in a roof sky and/or in roof file of a commercial motor vehicle. The airbag completely covers a disk region of the vehicle door in released condition. The airbag is released during lateral revolution of the commercial motor vehicle detected by detection units that are installed in the commercial motor vehicle.
