In order to enable the suppression of sensitivity reduction and the prevention of color mixture, disclosed is a solid-state image pickup device provided with: a plurality of pixels which are arranged in a matrix on a first surface of a first semiconductor layer (2) of a first conductivity type, each of the pixels comprising a photoelectric conversion element (4) that has a pn junction configured from a first semiconductor region (6) of a second conductivity type provided on the first surface of the first semiconductor layer and a second semiconductor region (8) of the first conductivity type provided on the surface of the first semiconductor region, converts light incident from a second surface on the reverse side of the first surface of the first semiconductor layer into a signal charge, and stores the signal charge; and a pixel separation region (10) which is provided between the plurality of pixels and separates the plurality of pixels from each other, the pixel separation region comprising a second semiconductor layer (12) of the first conductivity type covering surfaces that are in contact with the photoelectric conversion element, and an insulating film (14) covering the second semiconductor layer and having a lower refractive index than that of the second semiconductor layer.
