PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cooling equipment and a cooling method for a hot-rolled steel sheet which give various cooling rates to the hot-rolled steel sheet when cooling it. SOLUTION: In the cooling equipment 14A, upper headers for supplying cooling water onto the upper surface of the steel sheet 10 are composed of intensive cooling headers 21 and ordinary cooling headers 25. The intensive cooling headers 21 are located above the width-direction outside of the steel sheet and supplies bar-shaped cooling water 23 downwards toward the width-direction inside of the steel sheet at a density of flow rate of 2.0-10.0 m<SP>3</SP>/m<SP>2</SP>/min and the ordinary cooling headers 25 are located just above the steel sheet 10 and supplies the cooling water 27 at a density of flow rate of 0.5-2.0 m<SP>3</SP>/m<SP>2</SP>/min.
