[Also in Division D1] Production of a polyamide-6 conjugate bicomponent filament comprises dividing the melt from a polycondensation into two parts, subjecting one part to a vacuum treatment to remove some monomer and some oligomers and spinning this component together with the untreated part into a conjugate bi-component filament. The untreated part may have a relative viscosity of 2À0 to 2À5 and the vacuum treated part may have a relative viscosity of 2À5 to 3À5, both measured at 1% by weight in m-cresol at 20‹ C. The proportion by weight of the polymerization melt subjected to a vacuum to the untreated portion may range from 1 : 1 to 1 : 0À1. The resulting fibres may be stretched and heat-treated to induce crimp.
