The modular system has a handling device (1) for receiving or storing the objects (2) and carrying medium-weight loads such as an industrial robot combined with modules such as storage-rack system (34), a work piece-setup station (37), a tool storage or a washing machine (35). The handling device is moved in a working space with circular or cylindrical boundaries. The modules are arranged circularly around the handling device. The storage-rack system consists of rack modules. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a handling device; (2) a method for storing or receiving of portable platforms in a radially oriented two- or multi-row storage-rack system and for logistical organization of the portable platforms; and (3) a handling device with a base.
