[Also in Division B3] A ball and socket joint comprises a housing 1, a joint pin 2 and ball 3 and a cover plate 8 friction welded (see Division B3) to the housing on the side opposite the pin 2, an insulating layer 11 being included between the plate and the ball. As shown, the ball is supported between two caps 4, 5 of polyurethane plastic having a cross-linked molecular structure, the cup 4 having a sealing collar 6. The plate 8 may be domed with a flat edge 9 welded to a shoulder 10 of the housing or may be domed with a cylindrical edge, dish shaped or flat and may have a centre punch mark for receiving the centering prick 13 of an electromagnet 12 which is used to weld the parts together. A chuck may be used to grip a dish shaped plate 8 when welding. The insulating layer may be an annular disc of asbestos 11 coated with lubricant may be included. A hollow spherical insert may be sited between the cover plate and the ball element. |
