<p>Production of ionic liquids and/or solids (I) is carried out using cationic synthesis modules (II), comprising a quaternized ammonium, phosphonium or sulfonium cation and a hydrogen carbonate, carbonate or mono-(alkyl or aryl)-carbonate anion, and anionic synthesis modules (III) : Production of ionic liquids and/or solids (I) is carried out using cationic synthesis modules of formula (Q +>) n.(Yn-) (II) and anionic synthesis modules (III), specifically by reacting (preferably storable) (II) with (III) in a modular process. Q +>quaternized ammonium, phosphonium or sulfonium cation of formula N +>R 1>R 2>R 3>R 4>, P +>R 1>R 2>R 3>R 4> or S +>R 1>R 2>R 3>; or an analogous quaternized heteroaromatic residue containing nitrogen, phosphorus or sulfur; R 1> - R 4>linear, branched or cyclic, optionally unsaturated alkyl or mono- or polycyclic aryl or heteroaryl (all optionally substituted by functional groups), R 1> - R 4> optionally being linked to form polyvalent groups; Yn- : HCO 3 ->, CO 3 2-> or ROCO 2 ->; and R : linear, branched or cyclic, optionally unsaturated alkyl or mono- or polycyclic aryl or heteroaryl; or the residue of another type of mono-substituted carbonate. Independent claims are included for: (1) a variant on the process, as above except that Yn- is a hydroxide (OH ->) or alcoholate (OR' ->) anion; and (2) the ionic liquids and/or solids (I) obtained by the process.
