An electronic receipt server is described which, upon receiving receipt data associated with a customer purchase transaction from a first entity 601, generates a reference associated with the customer purchase transaction 602, stores the receipt data in the data store in association with the reference 603 and returns the reference to the first entity 604. On receipt of a request including the reference from a second entity 605, the server sends an electronic receipt to the second entity 608, the electronic receipt being associated with the reference, and presents the customer purchase transaction according to the receipt data. A point of sale system sends receipt data to a first entity (e.g. receipt server) and receives a corresponding reference back. The POS system then embeds the reference in a message associated with the transaction to a second entity (e.g. acquiring server). Image watermarking may be used for the receipt and the reference may be generated as a hash of the card number or a timestamp. |
