<p>A method for treating aqueous organic waste or by-product streams 12 comprises passing an aqueous organic waste or by-product stream comprising soluble and insoluble solids through a biodigester reactor 18. The stream is also subjected to pervaporation separation using a membrane which permits only water vapour to be transported through the membrane, thereby generating a contaminant free water stream and a stream containing an increased dry matter content as compared to the stream immediately prior to the pervaporation separation. One or more output streams from the biodigester may be held at a temperature of at least 70°C to ensure the stream(s) is/are aseptic. It is preferred that the bio-digester reactor is an anaerobic reactor. In another aspect, a plant for treating aqueous organic waste or by-product streams is claimed. The plant is capable in use of generating output streams consisting of biogas 42, contaminant free water 30 and a digestate stream 44. Aseptic fertilizer products are also claimed which comprise biodigester reactor digestate having a dry matter content of at least 20% by weight. In further aspect, the aseptic fertilizer product also comprises a fertilizer-enhancing additive.</p> |
