1315394 Treating cyanide-containing effluents L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 18 Sept 1970 [29 Jan 1970] 44697/70 Heading C1C Organic cyanide- or nitrile-containing effluents are treated with a peroxy compound under alkaline conditions whereby the cyanides or nitriles are converted into amides. The amides may subsequently be converted into organic acids or salts thereof. The nitriles mentioned are acrylonitrile, oxodipropionitrile, acetonitrile, benzonitrile, propionitrile and methacrylonitrile. The peroxy compound may be hydrogen peroxide, sodium or potassium percarbonate, sodium, potassium or ammonium dipersulphate, monoporsulphuric acid, potassium monopersulphate, alkali metal perborate or perpyrophosphate, urea peroxide or alkali or alkaline earth metal peroxide. The peroxy compound may be formed in situ by reacting hydrogen peroxide, alkali metal percarbonate perborate or perpyrophosphate, urea peroxide, alkali or alkaline earth metal peroxide with an anhydride, acid chloride, aldehyde, ester or acyclic N- compound. Sodium hydroxide or carbonate may be used in the process which may be performed at elevated temperature. The effluent may be from a plastics manufacturing process. |
