Ionic liquid (I) having an organic cation with thiophosphate anion is new. Ionic liquid (I), having an organic cation (Q +>) with thiophosphate anion, of formula ((R1aO-P(-OR1b)(=O)-S ->)(Q +>)) (1a) or ((R1aO-P(-OR1b)(=S)-O ->)(Q +>)) (1b) is new. R1a, R1b : optionally substituted 1-30C hydrocarbyl group, preferably optionally saturated alkyl groups, cycloalkyl or aromatic groups, aryl or aralkyl groups, (where all or part of hydrogen of R1a and R1b is optionally replaced by heteroatoms such as halo), where the hydrocarbyl group optionally carries one or more -CO 2R, -C(O)R, -OR, -C(O)NRRaa, -C(O)N(R)NRaaRbb,-NRRaa, -SR, -S(O)R, -S(O) 2R, -SO 3R, -CN, -N(R)P(O)RaaRaa, -PRRaa-, -P(O)RRaa, -P(OR)(ORaa), or -P(O)(OR)(ORaa); and R, Raa, Rbb : H or 1-30C hydrocarbyl group.
