PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonconventional new line illuminator. SOLUTION: The illuminator for generating linear illumination light includes: a single light source 1; one or more coaxial lens(es) 2; and a cylindrical lens array 3 formed by arranging a plurality of cylindrical lenses 3-i; and is structured such that divergent luminous flux from the single light source 1 is focused on one or more line images LI by the one or more coaxial lens(es) 2 and the cylindrical lens array 3.
