A high 1,4-polymer or copolymer of a conjugated diene is reacted with an a ,b -unsaturated dicarboxylic compound and the adduct is partially hydrogenated. In a modification, the high 1,4-polymer or copolymer is partially hydrogenated and then reacted with the dicarboxylic compound. The preferred reactants are polybutadiene and maleic anhydride. The products are soluble in aqueous alkali solution. |
