PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for determining mass and/or mass proportion of a wall section of a plastic bottle are provided to determine mass based on mass distribution without the calculation of mass value of a wall section. CONSTITUTION: A method for determining mass and/or mass proportion of a wall section of a plastic bottle comprises following steps. An infrared light and an ultraviolet light are irradiated on an irradiated area of a sidewall(5) of a bottle. The light distribution of light passing through the bottle along the detected area of the side wall is obtained. Mass distribution of a bottle sidewall is calculated from the light distribution. The mass proportion of the mass of the sidewall is determined based on the mass distribution.
