1,191,879. Ballast tamping machines. MATISA MATERIEL INDUSTRIEL S.A. 6 Oct., 1967 [6 Oct., 1966], No. 45618/67. Heading E1G. A mobile railway ballast tamping machine has two sets of tamping tools 15-16 and 17-18 straddling two adjacent sleepers 4, the tools being vibrated in anti-phase by a common pair of opposed eccentrics 59, and being closed or opened by screw and nut gearing 32. The tools are cross-linked by rods 65, 66 and are pivoted on respective nuts sliding on a rod 31 and actuated by aligned oppositely-threaded spindles 32..35. The outer spindles 32, 35 are chain driven by motors 36, 37; the inner spindles 33, 34 comprise a single unit which may be left stationary or which may be manually coupled to the outer spindles by respective gear couplings 37, 48 incorporating axiallymovable toothed sleeves, Fig. 3 (not shown). The tamping tools are arranged in rows across the track, Fig. 2 (not shown), there being over each rail 3 a tamping head 7 which is hydraulically raised and lowered on guides 8 and which carries two sets of threaded spindles each carrying two tamping tools. |
