[Also in Division B2] Liquid is applied to the surface 12 of a record sheet 24 by a head 30 reciprocated over the surface by a chain 56. The liquid may be water, a liquid developer consisting of toner particles dispersed in a carrier liquid, or a rinse liquid e.g. (Registered Trade Mark) "Freon TF". The head 30 has a removable liquid supply conduit 32 within a liquid removal conduit 34. A metal manifold 74 fixed to an electrically insulating block 64 Fig. 4 (not shown) has a longitudinal slit 76 Fig. 3, to provide the required rate of liquid flow from any one of tubes 14, 16, 18, 20, 22. The manifold 74 may be electrically biased with respect to a conductive support for the sheet 24. Exhaust conduits 82, 84 are enlarged at (83), (85) Fig. 2 (not shown) for connection to exhaust hoses 94, 96 Fig. 1, connected through a hose 98 to a vacuum pump. Air at atmospheric pressure is drawn into the head 30 through conduits 100 and 102 and in the direction of arrows 82a, 84a, thus removing excess of liquid deposited on the surface 12 and preventing liquid leaking out from under the head. An electric heater 103 reduces condensation within the head 30 during operation. |
