[Also in Division H5] A steam chest 10 for heating hair curlers is modified for use as a facial steam bath or inhaler by provision of a tubular face piece 120. The steam chest consists of a box-like base with a hinged lid, the base enclosing a steam generating compartment surrounded by a water reservoir 65, which communicate with each other via a water metering slot 66. A perforated tray 50 is mounted on top of the steam compartment with its edges abutting the walls 58 of the chest. Within the compartment is an electrical resistance heater 94 (see Division H5) consisting of two interleaved U-shaped electrodes. The face piece 20 is positioned within the chest, on top of the perforated tray, and has a cross-sectional area that substantially surrounds the top of the steam compartment so that steam generated therein is conducted to the face placed at the outer, suitably contoured end of the tube. The face piece may be formed from a single sheet of flexible material bent around into a tube, the adjoining ends then being secured together; it may be wrapped around the closed chest when not in use, thereby acting as a fastening device to keep the lid closed (see Fig. 30, not shown). Preferably there is a permeable pad (e.g. of cellular polyurethane) placed inside the face piece and seated on the perforated tray, to diffuse the current of steam. The pad may be charged with a volatile medicament or inhalant which is dispersed in and inhaled with the steam. (For Figures see next page) |
