The method involves adjusting the phase position after early application of the propelling flow force or flow moment at a closure element (32), and adjusting the phase position after late application of the braking flow force or flow moment at the closure element. The phase position at the closure element is changed by applying flow force or flow moment to the temporary accelerating or decelerating closure element. An independent claim is also included for a closure device for controlling a flow channel, particularly of a piston engine.
