A core 40 is coated with rubber or synthetic plastics material by apparatus supplied by an extruder head 20 whereby the material passes from an annular chamber 101 through passageways 103, 104 in an annular homogenizing plate 102 to an annular chamber 105 from which it flows through an annular orifice 107 to an expansion chamber, in part defined by a divergent cone 106 whereby the material forms an unconstricted sheath which is finally shaped by a plate 108. The core is guided by a detachable sleeve 110 within an insert 109.
