<p>Peat or other organic sediments which are in their natural moist state or have only been mechanically dewatered are upgraded by admixing therewith flocks of 0.1-20mm (pref. 1-10mm) of an open-cell hydrophilic polyurethane foam having a density of 10-50 kg/cm3. The amt of polyurethane foam added is determined empirically, being generally 20-50 vol.%. Without the addition of nutrients, the product is of use as a soil-improver or mulch, and with the addition of a complete fertiliser can be used as a human fertiliser. Tedious and expensive drying of the peat is not required, and strongly degraded peat and/or other deposits can be used. The finished product fully re-absorbs water after drying out and has soil-like characteristics.</p> |
