1335076 Sabot projectiles SPACE RESEARCH CORP 19 April 1971 [12 March 1970] 23995/71 Heading F3A A projectile assembly comprises a projectile 1 and a sabot 4 having a plurality of separate arcuate segments secured in place around the projectile by a driving band 7. The segments intermesh both with the driving band and the projectile such that thrust and spin are imparted to the projectile upon firing from a gun. The driving band is adapted to break under the action of centrifugal force when the projectile assembly leaves the gun so as to enable the segments to separate from the projectile. The intermeshing surfaces between the segments and the projectile are formed by screw threads 8 and keys 11 located in opposed apertures in the segments and projectile. A sabot of the same kind may be provided at the front of the projectile or a simpler sabot 5, from which the keys 11 are omitted, may be provided for barrelguidance purposes. An obturator 15 is adapted to drop away from the projectile in flight. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the forward sabot is formed with perforations. |
