The method involves assigning a switching characteristic to operating modes such as output mode and target mode, of an automatic transmission. A target gear within two stages is higher than an output gear, when the switching takes place at an operating point of a motor vehicle. The target gear and the output gear are specified by the characteristics of the target mode and the output mode, respectively. An intermediate gear is engaged between the output and the target gears, where the stages of the intermediate gear lie between the output and the target gears. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a gear selection in a motor vehicle.
