Arc furnace comprises a refractory lined melting space and a fixed lid, through which at least 3 electrodes enter which are either fixed or may be electrically actuated. From a top mounted bunker the raw material (e.g. scrap iron) is supplied through pipes leading through the lid. Near the bottom is a tip hole for the steel, and at different levels drain troughs are provided for the slag. The distance between the electrodes and the furnace wall is large enough for a protective layer of unmolten metal to form against the wall surface. To maintain a continuous smelt cycle a predetermined amount of steel smelt and slag (acting as a buffer) remains in the furnace.
|
