1,248,823. Conditioning tobacco. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 6 Aug., 1970 [6 Aug., 1969], No. 39274/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Division F4] An inclined rotary drum tobacco dryer (see heading F4G) which may also be used to humidify tobacco comprises shelves 4 which are inclined to the radii of the drum (fig. 3) such that they lean in their direction of motion, the inclination increasing nearer the lower end of the drum. Also provided in the drum is one or more guide members 8 which are chutes occupying central positions in the drum and which slope in the opposite direction to the drum, as viewed from the side. In the case of the humidifier the guides 8 overlap vertically. The operation of the humidifier relies on the fact that dry tobacco will begin to slide down a slope of increasing steepness before wet tobacco so that dry tobacco may slide off a shelf 4 and fall freely in the drum while wet tobacco may remain until the shelf arrives at Y when it falls on to guide 8 which conveys it to a location higher up the drum 1. Tobacco is fed into the drum at its lower end and discharged at the upper end, the drier tobacco spending more time inside the drum than the more moist tobacco. |
