A centrifugal separator for the batchwise treatment of liquid, e.g. a blood sample, comprises a rotatable body 7, Fig. 1, a tubular container 1 for the liquid arranged centrally and axially in the body, a receptacle 3 releasably fastened to the open end of the container and having a larger diameter than the container, and an inwardly directed lip, e.g. a flange 5 as shown, at the open end of the container for retaining the heavier phase in the container and allowing the lighter phase to flow out into the receptacle. The hub 18 of the receptacle 3 is releasably fastened to the tube 1 by means of conical surfaces 6, a shoulder 2 on the conical portion of the tube being engaged by a corresponding shoulder on the lower portion of the hub. The lighter phase is collected in an annular chamber 19 formed in the receptacle. The body 7 is closed by a lid 9 having pivotable locking members 11 which on rotation of the body engage in a groove 13 in the body against the force exerted by springs 17. The receptacle has an opening 4 through which the lighter phase is poured after the container-receptacle assembly has been removed from the body, e.g. by means of a tool inserted into the opening 4, at the end of an operation and after the receptacle has been detached from the container. The container and the receptacle may be made of resilient plastics. The body 7 is mounted on a shaft 15 driven by a motor. In a modification, instead of the flange 5 on the receptacle, the lip may be arranged on the interior wall of the tubular container, e.g. as a thickened portion of the wall. In Fig. 3, a rotor 32 open at its lower end is mounted in a bearing 35 in a stationary support 31 and is driven from a motor by means of a belt and a pulley 34. The containerreceptacle assembly 2, 3 is inserted through the open end of the rotor and the upper portion of the receptacle fits exactly in a bore portion 37 of reduced diameter in the rotor. The lower end of the rotor carries a number of spring-actuated arms 42 pivotable at 43 and provided with rounded surfaces 44 which, in operation, engage with the bottom of the tube 1 to support the latter. After an operation, a rod 39 located in the upper portion 33 of the rotor and carrying a plunger 40 is pressed down to dislodge the receptacle 3 from the bore portion 37 of the rotor. |
