Apparatus for production of continuous cords or yarns of carbon fibres of high strength and Young's modulus from organic polymers, esp. from polyacrylonitrile. The apparatus comprises a feed spool of organic polymer fibre cord or yarn; a brake for this; oxidation oven contng. devices for keeping oxidising atmosphere and maintaining a temp. of up to 250 deg.C.; supporting and internal driving devices for the fibre, running at predetermined speed, while the fibre is maintained under tension controlling its length. A take-up device receives the oxidised fibres as they leave the oven. The driving and take-up devices maintain sufficient tension on the fibres to prevent them slipping. There is also a carbonisation furnace contng. devices permitting a non-oxidising atmosphere to be maintained, and temp. gradient rising of 1,000 deg.C.; a second feed spool for introducing the oxidised fibres into the carbonisation furnace, and a take-up device for receiving the carbonised fibres as they leave the furnace.
