1,206,649. Metal lactams. MONSANTO CO. 17 Nov., 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 52488/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A solution of at least 25 wt. per cent of a metal lactam in a sulphoxide R-SO-R<SP>1</SP>, where R and R<SP>1</SP> are substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radicals which may be linked to form a ring, useful as a catalyst for the anionic polymerization of lactams, may be prepared by reacting the metal or a compound, e.g. the hydride, hydroxide, alkyl or alkoxide, with the lactam in the presence of the sulphoxide. The metal lactam may be modified with a halogen which is postulated to link to the metal atom. Specified metals are Na, Mg and Al; lactams are pyrrolidone, piperidone, capro- and capryl-lactams and dodecanone isoxime; and sulphoxides are dimethyl, ethylisopropyl, dioctyl, diphenyl, phenyl methyl, dibenzyl, di-p-tolyl, cyclopentamethylene, vinyl methyl, diallyl and naphthylphenyl. In examples solutions are obtained by reacting caprolactam with sodium metal or methoxide in sodium sulphoxide or with magnesium methoxide in diethyl or cyclopentamethylene sulphoxide. |
