Disclosed is a method for producing an aluminum titanate baked body by forming a mixed starting material containing an additive and an inorganic compound source powder containing an aluminum source powder and a titanium source powder, degreasing the obtained formed body at 150-900°C, and then baking the degreased formed body at 1300°C or higher, wherein the quantity of particles in the aforementioned inorganic compound source powder having a particle size of 0.1 µm or less is 1-5 masses for every 100 masses of the aforementioned inorganic compound source powder.
