The invention relates to a filter device comprising a system for retaining particles emitted in the exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine. The device includes the following elements positioned successively in the exhaust line (3) of the engine, namely: a particle agglomeration device (6) capable of generating agglomerates having a particle size greater than that of the particles emitted by the engine; and a filtering material (7) which can be penetrated by the exhaust gases and which can retain the aforementioned agglomerates, said material being intended to be replaced after a pre-determined period of operation.
