PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide "a character string retrieval system, data structure of a character string database and a navigation device" allowing reduction of a data amount of the database. SOLUTION: A byte length-classified directory 301 is provided correspondingly to each byte length, and a facility name character string whose byte length is n is stored in the byte length-classified directory 301 of the byte length n. The storage of the facility name character string is performed by extracting the facility name character string from the maximum-number and non-extracted facility name character strings wherein a total of data of the facility name character strings does not exceed a prescribed size in order of a small character string number and repeating processing of storing it into a newly created character string file 303. Each character string file 303 is imparted with a file number FN in ascending order from 0 in order of a small character string number range of the stored facility name character string. In the database, designation of the facility name character string is performed by the character string number of the facility name character string and the byte length of the facility name character string.
