Disclosed is a measurement method wherein a measurement subject is held on a planar periodic structural body (1), linearly polarised electromagnetic waves are irradiated onto the planar periodic structural body (1), electromagnetic waves which are forward-scattered or back-scattered by the planar periodic structural body (1) are detected, and the characteristics of the measurement subject are measured in accordance with the change, which is caused by the presence of the measurement subject, in the dip waveform produced in the frequency characteristics of the forward-scattered electromagnetic waves, or in the peak waveform produced in the frequency characteristicsof the back-scattered electromagnetic waves. The planar periodic structural body (1) is a planar structural body in which at least two gaps (11) are formed therethrough in the direction perpendicular to the main face thereof, said gaps (11) being arranged periodically in at least one direction on the main face. The electromagnetic waves are irradiated from the direction perpendicular to the main face of the planar periodic structural body.
